Friday Faces
She’s graced the stage for 59 years now—with no plans to close the curtain any time soon. Our ‘Friday Face’ this week is English film legend, Dame Maggie Smith. You might recognize her from Hook or the Harry Potter film series, but we’re all about her Emmy winning performances in Downton Abbey. Her wit as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham is another reason to tune into the British period drama.
Her character’s dry humor and quips like, “no one wants to kiss a girl in black” are apparently a perfect fit for the actress. The series’ creator, Julian Fellows has said she “…has a unique sense of comedy, based on a somewhat ironic view of real life, making it both funnier and more sad.”
And Smith is no stranger to struggle—she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and even considered leaving the theatre. She’s since made a full recovery and we admire her strength to continue acting. For Smith it seemed the show must go on—and we’re excited to keep watching.
