An Ode To...
“I’m really not interested in doing it for my own ego. I’m not a designer. If someone asked me to do something that was beneficial to a cause, then maybe I’d consider it, but not just [to be able to say] ‘Look at me! I’ve got my own line!' [It’s] gotten so ridiculous." - Emma Watson,
WWD
This week's Friday Face (coming out on Sunday as a result of a mega busy week! My apologies.) is the adorable 20 year old, Emma Watson. Watson first cast her spell on us with her 2001 debut as bookworm Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Nine years later, Watson is wrapping up the last installment of the Harry Potter tales with The Deathly Hallows Part I and II, and planning the next steps in her career.
With her fame from Harry Potter came a beacoup of parties, premieres and photo shoots, all of which have one fabulous thing in common: Fierce Fashion. The actress and art connoisseur first fell for fashion because she felt it was an extension of art itself, which I, personally, have to agree with emphatically. Her love and devotion did not go unnoticed and it wasn't long before Watson was asked to become the face of Burberry's Fall 2009 campaign.
Shortly after the Burberry launch, Watson announced her most important work yet: a partnership with
People Tree, a Fair Trade organization:
We like to think of it in terms of our little shoots-and-roots motif. We provide you with
exclusive fashion
- the shoots - while at the same time we work deep down through the
roots, improving the lives and environment of the artisans and farmers
in developing countries who work to produce it. It's
Fair Trade throughout. Simple." To find out more about how it all works visit
People Tree About Us.
Since her partnership with People Tree Watson has become devoted to Fair Trade fashion saying, "I will put it out there that I will work for anyone for free if they are prepared to make their clothing fair trade organic," (Us Weekly). And that is exactly what she is doing. Watson has recently announced her newest partnership, this time with famed Italian designer Alberta Ferretti.
"We are doing an organic clothing range. I can't reveal the name yet but there will be more information about it soon... Ferretti wrote to me and said, "I saw what you did with People Tree and I think it's a great idea and will you do something with me?'"
Expected to release sometime next year, the collection is sure to be nothing short of spectacular.
One thing is definitely for sure:
The Deathly Hallows will not be the death of Watson. The
Harry Potter beauty and fashion maven is doing
amazing things at her young age and, I think, it's safe to say we can expect even more from her in the future. So here's to you, Emma Watson. While continuing to captivate us on the Silver Screen, may you also continue to support and encourage Fair Trade fashion. It's something that we absolutely need to see more of.
